Bhutan smoking ban raises tensions

Issued on:

Smoking is banned in Bhutan. It's against the law to puff away in public places or sell tobacco. Smuggling tobacco is a crime punishable by three to five years in jail. The ban is one of the Himalayan kingdom's most controversial topics. It's also sparked debate among a population unused to protest. Bhutan - with a population of 700,000 - has only been a democracy since 2008.
