Tibetan refugees celebrate New Year

Issued on:

The Tibetan New Year, known as Losar, is underway. It is usually celebrated over two weeks. But this year celebrations have been cancelled in a show of solidarity with monks who have been setting themselves on fire to protest against Chinese occupation. At least 20 monks have self-immolated in recent months and China has been accused of severe human rights breaches in Tibet. The exiled Tibetan community in India feels there is little to celebrate this New Year.
