Seeking justice in Bangladesh

Issued on:

Forty years after East Pakistan separated from West Pakistan to form Bangladesh, the International Crimes Tribunal was set up in the capital, Dhaka, to punish those who collaborated with Pakistan during the 1971 war. Currently, seven suspects belonging to the Islamist political party Jammat-e-Islami and the opposition Bangladesh National Party are in custody on several charges including rape and forced religious conversions. The trials finally began in November last year, but the freedom fighters, their children and victims of war crimes say they are still waiting for justice.
