Four years after end of civil war, Sri Lankans celebrate Independence Day

Issued on:

Sri Lanka gained its independence from Britain exactly 65 years ago today. But independence did not mean peace for the island. Thousands of lives were lost in a civil war between the Sinhalese majority and the Tamil minority, which began in the early 1980s and officially ended in 2009. The north and the east of the country, predominantly Tamil, were worst affected. Four years on from the end of the war, life for most Sri Lankans has much improved according to observers. RFI spoke to Jehan Perera, the head of an independent advocacy organization about what Sri Lanka has to celebrate today... and what remains to be done.
