Johnny Hallyday cancels Asia mini-tour 'due to Thai unrest'

France's veteran rocker Johnny Hallyday has cancelled a mini-tour of Asia, officially because of the political turmoil in Thailand. Hallyday was due to play in Bangkok, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Hong Kong to raise funds for an educational charity set up by his wife.

The ageing star's local promoter, Your Mum, on Wednesday announced that the concerts have been scrapped "due to the instability in Thailand", recently the scene of massive protests against the government of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

New dates in early April next year will soon be announced, Hallyday's manager, Sébastien Farran, said on Wednesday.

Only one of the four planned concerts was actually set to take place in the country, however.

They were to raise funds for the Fondation La Bonne Etoile, set up by Hallyday's wife, Laetitia, a Unicef ambassador.

The charity is setting up a school for children living with HIV-Aids near Hanoi and hopes to build another in south Vietnam.

Hallyday, who gave a 70th birthday concert in June and has had some health scares recently, has a tour of the US planned for spring 2014.
