Marking 50 years of diplomatic ties between France and China

Issued on:

France and China are today commemorating fifty years of diplomatic ties. On 27 January 1964, France established relations with the People’s Republic of China, led by Mao Zedong since 1949. President Charles de Gaulle’s decision was welcomed at home, but decried by the United States, which still only recognised one China: the nationalist government in Taiwan. This report was prepared with archive materials from INA, (France's National Audiovisual Institute) with reports from Stephane Lagarde in Beijing and input from RFI's La Marche du Monde programme.
