One man dead, boy missing as storms hit New Caledonia

media Noumea, the capital city of New Caledonia DR

A young man has died and a six-year-old boy is missing in heavy rain and flooding that has hit the French Pacific territory of New Caledonia. The south of the archipelago remained on cyclone alert on Wednesday and tropical depression Edna passed nearby.

Heavy rain drenched the north of New Caledonia, which had already suffered 48 hours of storms thanks to another depression, causing flooding and damage to roads.

A 23-year-old man was found in a flooded river he had tried to cross in Koné in the north and the six-year-old boy was swept away when his family car was among four that were carried off by the river Boghen on Tuesday evening.

An earlier report of two other missing people proved to be unfounded.
