Alcoholism and rising crime in Kerala

The southern Indian state of Kerala, often referred to as God’s own country, has the best socio-economic indicators in the country. But an alarming level of alcohol addiction and rising crime are spoiling its reputation. This verdant paradise, known for its swaying palms and beautiful backwater destinations, has notoriously earned the dubious distinction of being a tippler’s paradise. The god of choice is Bacchus, the Roman deity of wine.
