Gul Agha Sherzai - candidate with controversial past
Gul Agha Sherzai, 58, a Pashtun from the Barakzai tribe, he was born Mohammad Shafiq, became rich as a mujahedin commander fighting the Soviet occupation and has been dogged by accusations of corruption and brutality ever since.

Gul Agha was governor of Kandahar province before the Taliban came to power and recaptured it with US help in 2001.
He became governor of Nangarhar province in 2005 and is accused of enriching himself thanks to having control of the border with Pakistan.
