India’s older population aged 60 and above is over 100 million and is the second largest in the world. Their numbers are increasing and expected to go up threefold in the next three decades in a country of 1.2 billion plus people. However, reports of neglect and abuse of the elderly is increasingly being reported.  Many surveys have shown that abuse ranges from verbal to physical neglect and disrespect. For a country - which has always prided itself in good values and where elders were always treated with respect - it is now faced with changing times. A growing number of elderly folk are silently suffering at the hands of those they trust the most – their own children. In the first of a 4-part series, our correspondent Murali Krishnan examines the reality of India’s elderly .
