In November 2016 India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that 500 and 1,000 Rupee banknotes would no longer be legal currency, aiming to combat tax cheating, counterfeit and corruption. But the move has hit India’s rural poor who have little access to banks and financial services. In the first of a two-part series, correspondent Murali Krishnan reports from the northern state of Uttar Pradesh on the effects of the currency ban.
