CANNES FILM FESTIVAL 2010

Un Certain Regard

A section of special importance at Cannes is Un Certain Regard, which runs from 13 to 22 May, when prizes are handed out. It's prestigious enough to satisfy the organisers when faced with a dilemma of where to place a new film by Manuel de Oliveira (O Estranho Caso de Angelica) in his 101st year, or Film Socialisme by French veteran Jean-Luc Godard.

The jury

Eighteen films are lined up for a jury award, and four of them are in the running for the Camera d'Or for a first film.

With fewer jury members than for the official competition, one might mistakenly believe that Un Certain Regard faces an easier task.

However, the list of films for 2010 may prove just how tough this competition can be.

The woman who has her work cut out as chair/president of the jury for Un Certain Regard is screenwriter-director Claire Denis - first film Chocolat (1988 ).  She's made nine other films and her latest is called White Material (2009), which stars last year's Cannes official selection jury president, Isabelle Huppert.

Claire Denis is joined by journalist Patrick Ferla of Swiss Radio-Television, Kim Dong-Ho, the director of South Korea's renowned film Festival of Pusan, Helena Lindblad, film critic from the Danish newspaper Dagens Nyheter and Serge Toubiana who is the director of the Cinémathèque Française (The French national Cinematec in Paris).
