Saving Paris from destruction in 1944

Issued on:

As the Germans retreat from Paris in the face of their imminent defeat, the orders arrive from Berlin to destroy the city. On hearing the rumours, the softly spoken Swedish consul uses eloquent arguments and delicate negotiations to persuade the German governor not to go ahead with the plan. This is the plot of a play, Diplomacie, showing at Paris's Théâtre de la Madeleine. It is based on a true story, but how accurate is the portrayal?
