Hello everyone!

You’ve surely noticed by now we’ve been experimenting with the Sound Kitchen recipes … on Saturdays, at 5:16 universal time, tune in to hear if you are amongst the week’s winners. The winners names are here on our website, too. Look for Short Features / Sound Kitchen Winners.

Tune in on Sundays, at 4:22, 5:52 and 7:22 universal time, for the quiz question ... and whatever else is cooking up in the Sound Kitchen.

I have wonderful news! “The Sound Kitchen Listener’s Cookbook” will finally become a reality. First it will be put on-line, and then we’ll get to work on a printed version. The web team has asked for photos of your prepared dishes, as well as of you. So if you sent in recipes, get back into your kitchen and get cooking … but before you “tuck in” to your fabulous dish, take a minute to take a picture or two of the final product. And of yourself, too!

The projected date for the on-line version of the cookbook is May. Yippee!

This week’s question was read on 12 February, and was about the leap second, which is added to the world’s atomic clocks every four years. Why? To keep Universal Time in step with the Earth's unpredictable rotation. So to catch up, as it were, every four years the world’s atomic clocks stay at 23:59:59 for two seconds instead of one second. Hence the Leap Second, added every four years.

The winners this week are: M. Jean-Maurice Devault, who said he would “hold his breath to be in sync too!”

From Sirajganj, Bangladesh, Mizanur Rahman said he will spend his extra second loving his wife, and Shiuly Khatan said he will spend his extra second loving the earth.

The members of the Kumi Central RFI Club in Kampala, Uganda:

“I'll hold my breath and play dead to remain in sync with time, hold onto terra firma and elude being projected into a fathomless future” .. .that’s from Susan Lutagayo-Ongole.

Charles Ongole says he will not flow with a slow earth: he’ll be sure to be in his car and he’ll step on the accelerator pedal and “rev into the future.”

And Victor Okwi wrote: “I'll jump into the immobile atmosphere to skip earth's movement, so to speak.”

Here’s an answer after our radio hearts, from Zenon Teles of the Christian-Marxist-Leninist-Maoist Association of Listening Dx-ers in Goa , India … Mr. Teles will spend that extra second “listening to the RFI-English service.”

From the Chattopadhyay family in Murshidabad, India: Paritosh said he will spend his extra second sound asleep; Kajari said she’ll use the extra second to look after her family, and Sayan wrote: “that extra second will help me remember that time and tide wait for none. So I will use it to study."

Last but not least, our old friend Mr. Hans Verner Lollike in Hedehusene, Denmark wrote: ”You really put us on the spot with your question about the Leap Second. One extra second added to your life. For 12 days I have been thinking about that one second. I have decided that I will say an extra “thank you”! In my language, “thank you” is so short, that it will only take one second: tak!

Congratulations, winners!

This week’s question is a sporty one … a very famous India batsman has retired from international cricket. Who is this player – nicknamed “The Wall”?

Send me your answer by 23 April; the answer and the winners will be announced on the 29 April programme. Be sure you send your postal address in with your answer … and be sure and tell me if you are a Mr. or a Mrs. or a Ms. or a Miss – I don’t want to get it wrong!

Write in about your community heroes – the people in your community who are quietly working to make the world a better place, in whatever way they can. I am still looking for your “This I Believe” essays, too. Tell us about the principles that guide your life … what you have found to be true from your very own personal experience. Or write in with your most memorable moment, and/or your proudest achievement.

Send your mini book reviews, your musical requests, your secret “guilty” pleasure (mine’s chocolate!), your tricks for remembering things, your favourite quotations and proverbs, descriptions of the local festivals you participate in, or just your general all-around thoughts to:
