The 19 February Sound Kitchen winners

The 19 February Sound Kitchen winners

Are you one of this week’s lucky winners? Today you’ll hear who won the quiz about the 54th annual Grammy Awards. Click on that little “Listen” arrow above, and join in!

Hello everyone!

You’ve surely noticed by now we’ve been experimenting with the Sound Kitchen recipes … on Saturdays, at 5:16 universal time, tune in to hear if you are amongst the week’s winners. The winners names are here on our website, too. Look for Short Features / Sound Kitchen Winners.

Tune in on Sundays, at 4:22, 5:52 and 7:22 universal time, for the quiz question ... and whatever else is cooking up in the Sound Kitchen.

I have wonderful news! “The Sound Kitchen Listener’s Cookbook” will finally become a reality. First it will be put on-line, and then we’ll get to work on a printed version. The web team has asked for photos of your prepared dishes, as well as of you. So if you sent in a recipe, get back into your kitchen and get cooking … but before you “tuck in” to your fabulous dish, take a minute to take a picture or two of the final product. And of yourself, too!

The projected date for the on-line version of the cookbook is May. Yippee!

This week’s question was read on 19 February, and was about the 54th Grammy awards, which were held on the 12th of February. A young British singer absolutely triumphed that night: she won six awards! This young woman won every category for which she was nominated: Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Short Form Music Video, and Best Pop Solo Performance. Wow! My question to you was: who is this 23 year-old British singer?

The answer is: Adele. Adele Laurie Blue Adkins, to be exact.

The winners this week are: Mrs. Joynab Begum of the Shetu Radio Fan Club in Naogaon, Bangladesh; Mr. Solomon Fessahazion from Asmara, Eritrea; Mr. Srikanth Chitturi – he’s an IT student, from Tatipaka, India; Jeronimo Zamora, from Querétaro, Mexico, and Miss Dai Yun from Anhui Province, in China.

Congratulations, winners!

This week’s question is about the North American black bear, the Ursus Americanus. I just read a fascinating article about the black bears ability to heal during hibernation. For the past 25 years, a group of U-S scientists have been tracking 1000 black bears – using radio collars - to learn about their health and behavior. The scientists note when a bear is wounded, by gunshots or arrows from hunters, or from bites by other bears or predators – and were surprised to discover that the bear’s wounds, even if infected and inflamed, healed during their long winter nap. There was minimal scarring, the damaged skin re-grew, and many of the bears even grew hair from newly formed hair follicles, at the site of their injuries!

One of the researchers said he thinks there are implications for human medical research … maybe to help in developing treatments for slow-healing skin wounds in malnourished, hypothermic, diabetic and elderly patients.

So, I want you to send in any little bit of information you have on bears … how long do they hibernate? What is their expected life span? How long is the gestation period for a Mama Bear? You can even send in bear trivia … how did the Teddy Bear come to be named Teddy? Which native people pray to bears? I’d welcome an original bear story, or anecdote. How about a bear joke? The field is open …have fun!

Send me your answer by 30 April; the answer and the winners will be announced on the 5 May programme. Be sure you send your postal address in with your answer … and be sure and tell me if you are a Mr. or a Mrs. or a Ms. or a Miss – I don’t want to get it wrong!

Send your answers to:

Remember, it’s not just the quiz which wins you a prize. If your essay goes on the air, you’ll find a package in the mail from the Sound Kitchen. Write in about your community heroes – the people in your community who are quietly working to make the world a better place, in whatever way they can. I am still looking for your “This I Believe” essays, too. Tell us about the principles that guide your life … what you have found to be true from your very own personal experience. Or write in with your most memorable moment, and/or your proudest achievement.

Send your mini book reviews, your musical requests, your secret “guilty” pleasure (mine’s chocolate!), your tricks for remembering things, your favourite quotations and proverbs, descriptions of the local festivals you participate in, or just your general all-around thoughts to:

Include a phone number, if you can. I’d like to call you and put you on-the-air … and send you a thank-you gift for participating.

I look forward to hearing from you soon!
