Cameroonian singer Irma's crowd-funding fairy tale

Cameroonian singer Irma's crowd-funding fairy tale
Romain Bernardie James

Cameroonian singer/songwriter Irma has a fairy-tale story. In 2008 she was composing songs in her bedroom in Paris and posting them on social media for friends. In 2010 she released her debut album Letter to the Lord.

The album has now sold over 130,000 copies.

“That was crazy," she told RFI. "I started putting videos on YouTube, me on guitar having fun, and all of a sudden all those people are watching videos and sharing them, asking for more. It’s crazy what internet can do.”

My Major Company, a crowd-funding website, picked up on the buzz and Irma’s album was published thanks to 400 individuals who believed in her.

The young talented musician talks about why she owes so much to her fans … and her parents back home in Douala .
