Thousands of farm animals flood Marseille's Old Port

More than 4,000 sheep, horses, cows and other animals crossed the old port of the southern French city of Marseille’s, watched by 300,000 spectators on Sunday. The animals had travelled 600km in a “transhumance", a traditional seasonal movement of herds of livestock.

The event, which was part of the Marseille's programme as this year's European City of Culture, was organised by the Théâtre du Centaure, a troupe set up in 1989 that puts on events that combine elements of circus, theatre and cinema.

The theatre’s bosses, Manolo and Camille, said they wanted to bring animals into the city.

However, the organisers met resistance from the authorities, who were especially concerned about cleaning of the streets after the event.

The Théâtre du Centaure will be inviting the public to view multimedia installations and other events related to Sunday’s happening at Marseille’s Campagne Pastré park.
