French film actress Valérie Benguigui dies aged 47

The French actress Valérie Benguigui, who won a César award for best supporting role in last year’s cinema hit Le Prénom, has died at the age of 47.

She played the role of Babou in the film which was an adaptation of a highly successful theatre show with the same title.

She died on Monday from breast cancer following a three year battle.

French singer and actor Patrick Bruel, who starred with her in the film described himself as “overwhelmed” and “dreadfully sad”.

“Valérie was very brave." he said, "We waited so that she could be in the film. She showed great strength [during filming]."

Valérie Benguigui was also a theatre director.
