Paris' Fête de l’Humanité celebrates the life of Jean Jaurès

media French Socialist leader Jean Jaurès, 1859-1914

France’s biggest and most popular political and musical festival, Fête de l’Humanité, took over northern Paris this weekend in La Courneuve park.

Audio report - Fête de l'Huma 15/09/2013 - by Alison Hird Listen

The event is organised by flagship communist paper L’Humanité, now independent but was formerly the French communist party’s daily paper.

The paper was founded by socialist party leader Jean Jaurès in 1904.

As anti-militarist and a great humanist, he was one of the first social democrats and remains a source of unity and inspiration for the whole of the French left.

RFI’s Alison Hird reports from the festival to find out about how his legacy lives on, even in song.
