Paris’s Louvre museum was the world’s most visited museum in 2014, keeping its place at the top of the international culture league. More than half of its 9.3 million visitors in 2014 were under 30, a statement said.

Some 100,000 more people visited the Louvre in 2014 than in 2013, a statement said Tuesday, flocking to see world-famous masterpieces like Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa and the ancient Greek Winged Victory of Samothrace.

The 9.3 million total keeps the museum in the world’s most-visited slot, a place it has occupied for some time.

Foreign visitors represented 70 per cent of ticket sales, with Americans, Chinese, Italians, British and Brazilians visiting in large numbers, the statement said.

There was good news for lesser-known museums and galleries in the French capital, too.

The 14 museums run by the city council – unlike the Louvre or the Pompidou Centre of modern art, which are government-run institutions – beat their previous records with 3.4 million visitors, a 17 per cent rise on 2013.

Temporary exhibitions, like the Petit Palais’s Paris 1900, accounted for 1.9 million of tickets sold.

Sorry but the period of time connection to the operation is exceeded.
