This week on The Sound Kitchen, you’ll hear the answer to the quiz about South Sudan. There’s “On This Day”, some great music, and of course, the new quiz question. So click on that little “Listen” arrow above, and join in!

Hello everyone!

Welcome to The Sound Kitchen. You can catch the programme on-the-air every Saturday, at 6:15, 6:45, 14:45 and 16:45 universal time. You’ll hear the winner’s names announced and the week’s quiz question, along with all the other ingredients you have grown accustomed to: your letters and essays, “On This Day”, quirky facts and news, interviews, and great music … so be sure and tune in every Saturday.

Fabulous news! We have a shortwave frequency again! It’s 13725 kHz on the 22m band, and you can hear us between 6.00 and 7.00 UT every day. We’ve had reception reports from Algeria, Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, China, Cuba, Denmark, India, Indonesia, Japan, Latvia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Sierra Leone, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, the UK and the US, and although the frequency is “aimed” (or however that works) towards the African continent, give it a try. You never know … and be sure and send us your reception reports. Maybe we can get more time, which would be wonderful.

This week’s quiz: On 29 August, I asked you a question about the world’s youngest nation, South Sudan, which gained its independence from Sudan in 2011.

Unfortunately, less than two years into nationhood, a brutal civil war caused by a power struggle between the president and his former deputy broke out.

A peace deal – the eighth deal in the works – had been signed that week, which ensured a cease-fire and the installation of the former deputy as vice president of the country. And that was my question: you were to send in the names of South Sudan’s president and his former deputy, the names of the men who signed the peace deal in South Sudan on 26 August.

The answer is: Salva Kiir, the president, and Riek Machar, his former deputy.

The current peace deal is not working … fighting has continued, and the United Nations has warned the situation in South Sudan has actually worsened since the deal was signed. You can find out more about what is going in South Sudan right here on the RFI English webpage.

The winners this week are: Eric Abibo Ngandu, from Juba, South Sudan; Fansu Bolong Janneh from Banjul, The Gambia; Omoefe Onoriobe from Houston, Texas; Mamuda Sultana Mitu from Sirajganj, Bangladesh, and RFI Listeners Club member M Ganesan from Goa, India – who just celebrated his 49th birthday. Happy Birthday Mr Ganesan!

Congratulations winners!

This week’s question ... you'll have to listen to the show to participate. You have until 2 November to enter this week's quiz. The winners will be announced on the 7 November program.
