Hello everyone!

Welcome to The Sound Kitchen. You can catch the programme on-the-air every Saturday at 6:15, 7:15, 14:45 and 16:45 universal time. You’ll hear the winner’s names announced and the week’s quiz question, along with all the other ingredients you have grown accustomed to: your letters and essays, “On This Day”, quirky facts and news, interviews, and great music … so be sure and tune in every Saturday.

For our DX enthusiast friends: Our shortwave frequency is 9675 kHz on the 31m band, from 06.00 to 07.00 UT every day. We’ve had reception reports from Algeria, Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China, Columbia, Cuba, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Poland, Russia, Sierra Leone, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, the UK and the US, and although the frequency is “aimed” (or however that works) towards the African continent, give it a try. You never know … and be sure and send us your reception reports. Maybe we can get more time, which would be wonderful.

You can also hear our programs on WRMI (http://www.wrmi.net/) and WRN (http://www.wrn.org/listeners/). These broadcasters diffuse our programs out of the goodness of their hearts, but unless you tell us how you heard us, we have no way of knowing … so do write and tell us how you listen to us.

A hearty welcome to three new RFI Listeners Club members! Kristopher Arens of Creswell, Oregon in the US, Abdikadir Elmi from Nairobi, Kenya, and Rachid Dahmani from M'sila, Algeria. Welcome gentlemen!

This week’s quiz: On 10 December, I asked you a question about the presidential polls in The Gambia, where the country’s voters ousted their strongman president of 22 years - a man who took control of the country in a 1994 military coup. You were to send in the name of The Gambia’s president- elect, and the name of the outgoing president.

The answer is: A lot has changed since I asked you that question: initially, the incumbent president conceded defeat. A week later, he changed his mind, and decided to contest the election results; security forces took over the headquarters of the Independent Electoral Commission shortly thereafter, and the head of the Electoral Commission fled the country. Three private radio stations have been taken off air, the West African regional bloc, Ecowas, has been in conference with the incumbent president urging him to step down …it’s a mess. No telling what will happen next.

But the correct answer to my question when I asked it is: the president – elect is Adama Barrow of the United Democratic Party (he won 43.29 percent of the vote) and the incumbent is Yahya Jammeh of the Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction party – a party which was formed two years after Jammeh’s rise to power from the 1994 military coup d’état. Jammeh won 39.64 percent of the votes.

The winners are: Three from The Gambia: Fansu Bolong Janneh from Banjul, and Ramatouli Bah and William Joiner, both from Serrekunda. Also on the list of winners this week: Muhammad Shamim, the president of the RFI Golden Eagles Club in Keralam, India, and Zenon Teles, an RFI Listeners Club member, and the president of the Christian- Marxist-Leninist-Maoist Association of Listening DX-ers in Goa, India.

Congratulations winners!
