This week on The Sound Kitchen you’ll hear the answer to the quiz about your five favourite words in English. There’s a mini French history lesson, some new RFI Clubs to welcome, great music, and of course … the quiz. Just click on the arrow in the photo and enjoy!

Hello everyone!

Welcome to The Sound Kitchen. You can catch the programme on-the-air every Saturday at 6:15, 7:15, 14:45 and 16:45 universal time. You’ll hear the winner’s names announced and the week’s quiz question, along with all the other ingredients you have grown accustomed to: your letters and essays, “On This Day”, quirky facts and news, interviews, and great music … so be sure and tune in every Saturday.

For our DX enthusiast friends: Our shortwave frequency is 9675 kHz on the 31m band, from 06.00 to 07.00 UT every day. We’ve had reception reports from Algeria, Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China, Columbia, Cuba, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Poland, Russia, Sierra Leone, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, the UK and the US, and although the frequency is “aimed” (or however that works) towards the African continent, give it a try. You never know … and be sure and send us your reception reports. Maybe we can get more time, which would be wonderful.

You can also hear our programs on WRMI (http://www.wrmi.net/) and WRN (http://www.wrn.org/listeners/). These broadcasters diffuse our programs out of the goodness of their hearts, but unless you tell us how you heard us, we have no way of knowing … so do write and tell us how you listen to us.

A hearty welcome to four new official RFI Listeners Clubs! Three are in India, and two of those are in Murshidibad: the RFI Metali Students Club with Shivendu Paul as president and the RFI Women’s Club, Priyanka Paul, president. In Assam, there’s the RFI Listeners Club of Jorhat with Prithwiraj Purkayastha at the helm, and in Muzaffargarh, Pakistan, there’s the RFI Lovers Club with Mubashir Bukhari as president. Welcome!

If you would like to create an official RFI club, or transform your existing listeners club into an RFI club, click on the link at the bottom of this page for information on how to get started.

This week’s quiz: On 17 December, I asked you a very different kind of question: you were to send me your five favourite words in English. They didn’t have to be hard or unusual words, or have special meaning - just words you like the sound of. After all, as I told you, my favorite word in French is the word for sidewalk: “trottoir”. I think it is funny and I love to say it. Anyway, as there is no right answer for the question, I put all your responses in a hat and pulled out five. And here are the lucky winners:

• Sanusi Isah Dankaba from Nasarawa State, Nigeria, with “forklift”, “cheesy”, “literally”, “humble bee”, and “lovely”.

N.B. “Humble bee” is the old word for “bumble bee” – it changed from “humble” to “bumble” in the early 20th century. Darwin, for example, wrote about the “humble” bee, not the “bumble” bee.

• A. K. M. Nuruzzaman, the president of the RFI Amour Fan Club in Rajshahi, Bangladesh, with “brood”, “chatoyant”, “comely”, “efflorescence” and “halcyon”;

• RFI Club member Mohammad Akhsan from Dhaka, Bangladesh, with “wonder”, “daughter”, “weather”, “stating” and “potato”;

• Saidul Islam, a member of the Nilshagor RFI Fan Club in Nilphamari, Bangladesh, with “evening”, “window”, “sea”, “drink” and “tree”;

• Mrs C O Agboola from Ekiti State, Nigeria, with “reconciliation”, “prestige”, ”love”, “integrity” and “reputation”.

Congratulations winners!
