André Derain arrives at Paris' Centre Pompidou
André Derain is an artist who is a small fish in a big pond. He had the fortune to befriend Maurice de Vlaminck with whom he became known as one of the "Fauve" painters, depicting nature and figures in a wild style full of strong colours and thick, wavy, black outlines.
He also had the good fortune to meet Picasso, Matisse and Braque amongst others. He was among the beacons of the early 20th century.
Derain was also the heir of Monet, Pissaro and was captivated by ancient art found far from his native France, which led him to search new pictoral narratives of light and colour.
