Hello everyone! Welcome to The Sound Kitchen weekly podcast, published every Saturday. You’ll hear the winner’s names announced and the week’s quiz question, along with all the other ingredients you have grown accustomed to: your letters and essays, “On This Day”, quirky facts and news, interviews, and great music … so be sure and listen every week.

We want to hear from you.We have a phone number you can call to leave us a message, so we can hear your voice. Just call, give your name, your country, and a short message - something like “I love RFI”, because of course you do – and we can put you on-the-air. The number to call is: + 33 1 84 22 95 82.

For our DX enthusiast and shortwave listener friends: I am sad to announce we no longer have a shortwave frequency. Maybe, if enough of you write, we can have Paris Live PM broadcast on shortwave. Send an e-mail to thesoundkitchen@rfi.fr if you would like to hear RFI English on shortwave. Be sure you include your country, and why shortwave is important to you – inability to get on the internet, no FM near you …

In the past, we’ve had reception reports from Algeria, Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Columbia, Cuba, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, Ukraine, the UK and the US. And that’s just from people who are requesting QSLs, not the listeners who have counted on hearing us via shortwave because that is the only way they can listen to RFI English. Please write if you would like to hear RFI English on shortwave.

You can still hear us on WRN. As you know, we now broadcast only 1 hour per day, Monday – Friday, from 14:00 to 15:00 UTC/GMT.

For North America: WRN broadcasts the quotidian RFI English programme three times a day from Monday to Friday, from 06:00 to 06:59, from 10:00 to 10:59 and from 16:00 to 16h59 UTC/GMT.

There’s a new musical segment on The Sound Kitchen – your favorite songs. We started with female singers, and now we’re moving on to male singers. What I want you to do is send in your favorite song by a male singer, and tell why that song and that singer are important to you. Every week I’ll play one of your suggestions, and then we’ll change to band, instrumental, film, your children’s favorites … but for January and February, we’ll focus on men, so to your pens! Write to me at thesoundkitchen@rfi.fr, and be sure you include your city and country in your note – along with a link and a short translation, if you can. I think it is quite nice to share your favorite music as well as your thoughts about it – thanks to Daniel Singleton, the RFI English Head of Service, for the idea!

Teachers, take note!  I save postcards and stamps from all over the world to send to you for your students. If you would like stamps and postcards for your students, just write and let me know. The address is thesoundkitchen@rfi.fr

On this week’s podcast, we had a “game of chance”. I asked you to send in your New Year resolution(s); I put them all in a box and pulled out five. The winning resolution writers were: RFI Listeners Club members Jayanta Chakrabarty from New Delhi in India; Jean-Maurice Devault from Montreal, Canada and Riaz Hussain from District Chiniot in Pakistan. Finally, two listeners from Rangpur, Bangladesh: Waheed Nobi and Shahanaj Parvin.

Congratulations! Good luck keeping your resolutions! Keep us up-to date on how you are doing – and thanks to everyone who participated. Maybe next year it will be you!

This week’s quiz: On 1December, I asked you a French cultural question: that week, French president Emmanuel Macron announced that France would return artifacts to a country, artifacts which were plundered by the French colonial forces in 1892.

My question to you was: How many artifacts will be returned, by which French museum, and to which country?

The answer is: For the country: Benin. It’s the Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac Museum which will return the artifacts, and there are 26 of them.

Mr. Macron did not say that all artworks and artifacts taken from colonized countries would be returned. He did tell our Culture and Foreign ministers to help fulfill an objective he set a year ago: to ensure that the cultural treasures of sub-Saharan Africa be accessible in Africa through restitutions, but also exhibitions, exchanges and loans. He also called for an international conference in early 2019 on the return of African artifacts. So we’ll see what will go traveling, and what will go home.

The winners are: Tasneem Saleh from Nilphamari, Bangladesh and Muhammad Shamim S from Keralam State in India, who is the president of the RFI Golden Eagles Club. There are three RFI Listeners Club members on the winner’s list this week: Jörg-Clemens Hoffmann from Alsbach-Hähnlein, Germany; Heimer Sia from Manila in the Philippines, and Rachid Dahmani from M'sila, Algeria.

Congratulations winners!

Here’s the music you heard on this week’s program: “It’s Gonna Be Great!” written by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez and sung by Jim Cummings and Bud Luckey; Rimsky-Korsakov: “The Flight of the Bumblebee” and “Al Monte”, written by Philbert Armenteros, Leslie Cartaya, Raymer Olalde and Steve Roitstein and performed by Palo! (the lead singers in the group are Leslie Cartaya and Philbert Armenteros).
