The Sound Kitchen

The life of a songbird

Issued on:

Do you think opera singers are in a world far away from yours (especially if they hold the title of “Dame”?). This week on The Sound Kitchen, you’ll hear a Sound Kitchen Flashback with Dame Felicity Lott, a lovely soprano who has had a very successful career. Listen to Dame Felicity – you’ll probably change your mind - so click on that little “Listen” arrow in the photo above and join in!This is an interview which aired on a "Paris Live" broadcast in November 2016. The quiz is back on next week's podcast, ready for you on 9 March.

Hello everyone! Welcome to The Sound Kitchen weekly podcast, published every Saturday. You’ll hear the winner’s names announced and the week’s quiz question, along with all the other ingredients you have grown accustomed to: your letters and essays, “On This Day”, quirky facts and news, interviews, and great music … so be sure and listen every week.

I have a favor to ask of our women listeners. International Women's Day is on 8March, and we want to do the same thing with International Women's Day as we did with World Radio Day – put your voices on the air. We’ll play your voice recordings on our news program "Paris Live" and of course, right here in The Sound Kitchen.

You can record on your phone and then send the file to me at thesoundkitchen@rfi.fr   Use the file extensions Mp3 or WAV.

Say something about what it means to you to be in the world today as a woman ... or just say hello, give your name and country, and say "Happy International Women's Day!".

I don't know if you noticed, but every single listener who sent in a recording for World Radio Day was a man! Not a single woman's voice did we have !!! Sisters, we need to change that, and no better day for doing it than our day, International Women's Day.

I would also like to hear from you about your little moments of joy. Small, daily things: a beautiful sunset, a baby’s laugh. Add that as a very nice ingredient to our communal cooking – let’s share the joy! In these crazy times, we all need it … write to me at thesoundkitchen@rfi.fr

“My Favorite Music” is our new musical segment on The Sound Kitchen. During March and April we'll listen to favorite song by your favorite band. Be sure you share why the song and the band are important to you. Every week I’ll play one of your suggestions, and then we’ll change to instrumental, film, your children’s favorites … so to your pens! Write to me at thesoundkitchen@rfi.fr, and be sure you include your city and country in your note – along with a link and a short translation, if you can. I think it is quite nice to share your favorite music as well as your thoughts about it – thanks to Daniel Singleton, the RFI English Head of Service, for the idea!
