Hello everyone!

Welcome to The Sound Kitchen. You can catch the programme on-the-air every Saturday, at our new times: 6:15, 6:45, 14:45 and 16:45 universal time. You’ll hear the winner’s names announced and the week’s quiz question, along with all the other ingredients you have grown accustomed to: your letters and essays, “On This Day”, quirky facts and news, interviews, and great music … so be sure and tune in every Saturday.

This week’s quiz: On 21 February, I asked you a question about our weekly music program, World Music Matters, excellently produced and hosted by Alison Hird. That week, Alison had talked to composer Nissim Schaul about his debut CD “New Music for Old Instruments”. Schaul’s compositions combine sounds from his computer with 17th century western instruments, and as Schaul demonstrated some of his computerized sounds, Alison took a guess at what she was hearing ... and that was the question. What sound did Alison think she heard?

The answer is: a train. Alison thought she heard a train – but she was wrong! What Nissim Schaul had played for her was someone touching a string on an instrument, to which he added computer-generated reverberation.

The winners this week are:  Mogire Machuki, of the RFI Listeners Club in Kisii, Kenya; Hans Verner Lollike, from Hedehusene, Denmark; Royse Cramton, from Oak Park, Illinois, and two RFI Listeners Club members: Ralf Urbanczyk, from Eisleben, Germany, and Aniss Kaouane, from Skikda, Algeria.

Congratulations, winners!
