One million people to get charity food in France

Twenty-nine years ago the late French comedian Coluche created a food bank to fight against poverty in France. Today, the charity food distribution centres 'Les Restos du Coeur' (Restaurants of the Heart) again have opened their doors for a new winter season.

"Les Restos du Coeur" centres open for people in need during the winter months throughout France.

Last winter, about 960,000 people received help and more than 130 million meals were served.

The charity organisation fears that more people are in need today and will send their registration numbers up this winter, which could also lead to a general shortage in aid.

Agriculture Minister Stéphane Le Foll announced tax breaks today for all agricultural food donations.

Across France, 2,070 centres will be open daily to deliver free food for those in need until the end of March.
