Government forces have recaptured the city of Marsa el Brega, an oil terminal in the east of the country. On Wednesday morning planes attacked Ajdabyah in the east. The government is also trying to regain control of the nearby towns of Gharyan and Sabratha.
Two US warships meanwhile entered the Suez Canal on Wednesday on the way to Libya. The USS Kearsarge and the USS Ponce, which are carrying marines and equipment, entered from the canal’s southern entrance at 04h00 UT.
Kearsarge is carrying about 800 marines, a fleet of helicopters and medical facilities. It takes 12 to 14 hours for a ship to transit the canal.
"We're moving assets to be closer to Libya," a US defence official told French press agency AFP. "A ship like the Kearsarge is capable of many types of missions."
