Issued on:

Tunisian Prime Minister Ali Laarayedh is promising to crackdown on Ansar al-Sharia after police clashed with members of the radical Islamist group at the weekend. Laarayedh says that one protester was killed, 15 police injured and 200 members of Ansar al-Sharia have been arrested. The Salafists' third annual congress was to be held on Sunday in the holy city of Kairouan, outside Tunis but was banned. The group's fugitive leader, Abu Lyadh, says that his followers cannot not be defeated by "persecution." Aaron Zelin, an expert on radical Islamist groups, discusses the latest developments.
