In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the government has defended its right to explore the oil resources that might lie beneath the Virunga National Park. Last week, the rights group Global Witness called for the Congolese government to suspend the passage of a new oil bill, urging it to insert measures to prevent corruption. The Virunga National Park was designated a World Heritage Site in 1979 and is home to some rare and endangered species, such as the mountain gorilla.
