The 49-year-old EU security chief officer died in the attack, while his 50-year old deputy was wounded and was still in intensive care on Tuesday.

Their Yemeni driver was also wounded in the attack, according to their employer, Argus Security Projects.

The assaillants, who fled the scene, have not been identified.

Yemen's government on Tuesday pledged to find the perpetrators of the "cowardly attack".

French President François Hollande said his government will use " all its power to shine light on the circumstances of this odious act".

EU foreign policy representative Catherine Ashton called it "evil and senseless", adding that the EU delegation's aim is to help the country in its democratic transition and economic development.

Foreign diplomats have come more and more under attack recently in the Yemeni capital.

A week ago a German diplomat was targeted near the German embassy and wounded by gunmen who tried to kidnap him.
