France refuses to accept Guantanamo prisoner

Issued on:

The detention centre in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, run by the US military is still operational. There are fewer than 200 prisoners left there, but the fact that they remain runs counter to the promise of US President Barack Obama to close the camp completely. Dozens of prisoners have been released since he came into office and were sent to third countries. Algerian-born Nabil Hadjarab, who grew up in France, is still in Guantanamo where he was imprisoned eight years ago. On Friday the French ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that France will not take him when he is released, in spite of his repeated requests that it do so.
