Dagestan suicide blasts kill two, injure 27

At least two people were killed and 27 injured when twin suicide blasts struck a village in Russia's north Caucasus region, police said Tuesday.

Police report that a woman detonated a suicide belt  near an interior ministry post in the village of Gubden on Monday evening.

The woman was stopped after passing through a security gate, with the subsequent blast killing one police officers and injuring four others.

Two hours later, a car exploded after driving up to a police checkpoint in the same village, killing another officer.

At least five rebels and one police officer were killed during a raid on a suspected rebel hideout in the region on Tuesday.

Islamist Doku Umarov, who has claimed responsibility for the 24 January attacks on Moscow's Domodedovo airport, is believed to be hiding in the mountains that cover Dagestan, neighbouring Chechnya and parts of Russia's other north Caucasus republics.
