Issued on:

About 90 government ministers and senior officials were in Geneva on Tuesday for the opening of the Human Rights Council's 19th session. Among other issues on the agenda is a motion from the United States that irks the Sri Lankan government. The US wants an independent investigation into alleged atrocities committed by both sides at the end of the 37 year-long civil war. International rights groups have said that up to 40,000 civilians were killed in the final months of fighting. Sri Lanka's government has denied any civilians were killed by its troops. Suren Surendivan is the spokesperson for the Global Tamil Forum. He spoke to RFI as he was on his way to Geneva to lobby at the UNHRC.
