The attack happened at 4.15am after Thomas and his girlfriend left Bar 88, where he insists nothing had taken place that could have given rise to the attack, the expat website the Shanghaiist reports.

"We were not drunk. We didn't see the guys before. It was just pure racism," the Frenchman told the site.

Video filmed by eyewitness Shawn Kregan shows two men, one armed with a small knife according to Kregan, pulling their victim from the front seat of a taxi and setting about him, only to be joined by another and later by four others.

Police arrived within 10 minutes, although Kregan, who accompanied Thomas to the police station, complains that they "not really motivated to do anything about it".

Thomas suffered a wound to his head that required multiple stitches and severe bruising to the back, side and chest, the Shanghaist reports.

On Saturday six oenology students were attacked in a the French winemaking region of Bordeaux.

Three youths have been charged with the attack, which Interior Minister Manuel Valls described as "xenophobic".
