French trade minister to visit Myanmar next week

French Trade Minister Nicole Bricq is to visit Myanmar with representatives of 15 small and medium businesses next week. The trip comes as Europe and the US seek business opportunities in a country apparently committed to reform.

Bricq’s visit on 30-31 July follows Myanmar President Thein Sein’s meeting with François Hollande in Paris last week during which the French president praised changes in the south-east Asian country that has been ruled by the military for decades.

Last month the European Union readmitted Myanmar to its trade preference scheme.

The trip "will allow France to present what it has to offer to authorities" in the country, according to Bricq’s office, and will include meetings with Finance Minister Win Shein and other officials.

Earlier this month the French minister invited firms to apply online via her ministry's website to accompany her.
