Clashes have erupted in the Maldives between police and hundreds of protesters, after the outgoing president said he would remain in power after his term ended. President Mohamed Waheed was to have stepped down on Sunday, a day after the long-delayed presidential election. But because no candidate won the necessary fifty percent of votes, the country was essentially left in constitutional limbo. Mohamed Nasheed - who became the first democratically elected president in 2008 but was forced from office last year - led after the first round with 47 percent of votes. An analyst tells RFI that the people of the Maldives are angry.
