Law and order, Rom expulsions ... a week in Sarkozy's France

Issued on:

This week France continued to pay foreign-born Roma people to leave France, with 86 deported to Romania on Thursday and another 139 on Friday. President Nicolas Sarkozy ordered foreign-born Roma to be deported and illegal camps to be dismantled after a violent incident in July. Security has been dominating headlines, not just with the Roma, but also following rioting in Grenoble earlier this summer. This week the Minister for Industry, Christian Estrosi said mayors should be fined if they have not done enough to fight crime. The opposition says by cracking down on Roma and by lashing out at foreigners, the government is trying to deflect attention from the failures of their police policies, and fishing for far-right votes.
