Air France had initially announced it was cancelling the service on Monday, as well as on Thursday 8 March, before going ahead with a full suspension.

Since the beginning of the Syrian revolt, Air France had offered three flights per week to Damascus.

The airline company is in the process of contacting passengers to rebook flights.

France’s President Sarkozy announced on Friday that he was closing the French embassy in Damascus, in an attempt to condemn the Syrian regime’s repression of the people.

According to the United Nations, the backlash against President Bashal al-Assad’s government has caused more than 7,500 deaths since protests began last March.
