France continues to mourn the loss of seven people in and around Toulouse since 11 March, at the hands of lone gunman Mohamed Merah.

In just two weeks, Mohamed Merah has become a household name in France. The self-proclaimed radical Islamist began his shooting spree on 11 March and has left France in shock.

Presidential candidates temporarily called off their campaigning, as the country mourns the deaths of the three soldiers, three Jewish children and trainee rabbi killed in the attacks.

Prime Minister François Fillon said France’s intelligence services did their job perfectly and rejected claims that they could have prevented the killings.

Merah’s own death at the hands of French police special forces on 22 March, after a 32-hour seige, brought the drama to a close.

Police are continuing questioning of Merah’s family members for more clues as to how and why the crimes were committed.
