Paris Plages, which transforms the banks of the seine into a holiday resort complete with sand, palm trees deckchairs and petanque, is now in its 10th year. A hit with tourists and locals alike, it has spawned sister versions in tens of towns around the capital. In these poorer neighbourhoods such holiday clubs don’t just provide a distraction for youngsters, but they also help cement together very different and sometimes conflicting populations. RFI reports from Carrières sous Poissy - about 20 kilometers north east of Paris - where the left-wing mayor has become nothing short of a local hero.
