Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault and most of the cabinet attended the ceremony at the Invalides national monument, as were some opposition leaders, including Jean-François Copé of the right-wing UMP and François Bayrou of the liberal Modem.

Mauroy died following complications arising from a lung cancer operation last year.

The Socialists went on to hold their own tribute to Mauroy at their Paris headquarters along with his widow, Gilberte and former prime minister Lionel Jospin, former labour minister Martine Aubryn who is currently mayor of Lille, and the party’s National Secretary Harlem Désir, all of whom worked with Mauroy.

He will be buried on Thursday in the northern city of Lille, where he was mayor for 28 years.
