Frustrated with cats that gathered outside his place of business, the restaurant owner in Angers trapped one of them, locked it in a cage and threw a product used to unblock drains over it.

Witnesses called police and the man was given a suspended sentence on Tuesday.

Animal-rights campaigners say they will appeal and seek a harsher verdict.

The cat has had to be put down, they report.

On Monday Farid Ghilas, 24, was sentenced to a year in jail for throwing a five-month-old white-and-ginger kitten named Oscar as far as he could through a housing estate.

Ghilas was arrested in the southern city of Marseille on Friday after a video of his exploit was posted on the internet.
