French men punished for cat abuse
A restaurant owner in north-west France was given a four-month suspended sentence for throwing chemicals on a cat he had locked into a cage. On Monday a Marseille man was jailed for a year for hurling a kitten into the air and letting it land on concrete.

Frustrated with cats that gathered outside his place of business, the restaurant owner in Angers trapped one of them, locked it in a cage and threw a product used to unblock drains over it.
Witnesses called police and the man was given a suspended sentence on Tuesday.
Animal-rights campaigners say they will appeal and seek a harsher verdict.
The cat has had to be put down, they report.
On Monday Farid Ghilas, 24, was sentenced to a year in jail for throwing a five-month-old white-and-ginger kitten named Oscar as far as he could through a housing estate.
Ghilas was arrested in the southern city of Marseille on Friday after a video of his exploit was posted on the internet.
