French prisoners run marathon … inside jail

Five prisoners ran a marathon inside a French jail on Friday. Together they ran 42,195 kilometres or 66 times the 638-metre track.

Urged on by wardens and fellow inmates of the prison at Nantes, in western France, the five ran the course in less than four hours.

“The only problem is the fact that you’re going round and round in circles,” Stéphane, the prisoner who finished first, said. “You can’t perform as well or you injure yourself.”

Two prisoners who already ran regularly in the prison yard came up with the idea because they wanted more time for their exercise, then three others joined them.

Staff marked out a track in the form of an eight to make the run easier on the participants’ joints.
