West Indies stun tournament favourites India to reach final

Tournament favourites and hosts India were stunned by the West Indies in the semifinal of the T20 World Cup last evening at Wankhede stadium in Mumbai. Lendl Simmons smashed an unbeaten 82 to help his team successfully chase the target of 193 runs with two balls to spare.

Put in to bat first, India got off to a steady start as opening batsmen Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane put up 62 runs in 7 overs.

India’s star batsman and tournament’s highest run scorer Virat Kohli, notched up yet another half century as he scored 89 runs in just 47 balls that helped India post a challenging total of 192 runs in 20 overs.

West Indies got off to a shaky start losing two wickets with just 19 runs on the board. Simmons joined opening batsman Johnson Charles to rebuild the West Indies innings with a crucial 97 run partnership for the third wicket.

Charles departure for 52 didn’t slow the run rate as Andre Russell participated in the run feast right from the word go. Russell’s 43 runs in just 20 balls and his 77 run unbeaten partnership proved decisive in West Indies’ win.

West Indies now take on England in the final on Sunday after England beat New Zealand in the other semifinal.
