Real Madrid ends Barcelona's unbeaten streak

Real Madrid came from behind on Saturday night to beat Barcelona 2-1 at the Camp Nou. Cristiano Ronaldo scored five minutes from time to inflict Barcelona’s first defeat in 40 games in all competitions.

The Portugal international’s strike followed shortly after the Madrid skipper Sergio Ramos was sent off for his second bookable offence.

It capped a remarkable turnaround for Zinedine Zidane’s men who went behind in the 56th minute when Gerard Pique headed home a corner.

Karim Benzema levelled seven minutes later to silence the home faithful who must have sensed a winner once Ramos had been removed. But it was Ronaldo with his 29th league goal of the season who had the last word on a night of homage to the former Barcelona player and coach Johan Cruyff who died on 24 March at the age of 68.

Though the locals did not receive the desired result, Barcelona are still in the driving seat in the race for the title.

Atletico Madrid - 5-1 winners over Real Betis, are in second place six points behind the leaders with seven games remaining. Real Madrid are third, seven points off the pace.
