Real beat Gremio to retain Club World Cup

Real Madrid retained the Club World Cup after beating Brazilian side Gremio 1-0 in Abu Dhabi. Cristiano Ronaldo scored the decisive goal to give Real their third Cup World Cup title in four years and their fifth trophy of 2017.

Cristiano Ronaldo broke the deadlock with a second half free kick to bring Real level with rivals Barcelona as the most successful club in the competition’s history.

The title adds to the La Liga, Champions League, Uefa Super Cup and Spanish Super Cup titles won by Real this year.

Earlier Mexican side Pachuca beat hosts Al Jazira 4-1 in the third-place play-off.

Atletico leapfrog Valencia in La Liga standings

Atletico Madrid jumped to second place in La Liga standings after beating Alaves 1-0. Valencia slipped to third place after facing a second defeat in three matches as they lost 2-1 to Eibar.

Leaders Barcelona who lead Atletico by three points have a game in hand.

Atletico, who have been unbeaten in La Liga this season, had to wait till the 75th minute, to break the deadlock as Fernando Torres slotted home the only goal of the match.

While Atletico registered their fourth straight win, Valencia’s title charge faltered again.

Eibar took the lead as Takashi Inui scored the opening goal the four minutes into the second half.

Valencia levelled the tie with a goal from Santi Mina. However, Joan Jordan scored a header from Ivan Alejo’s cross to secure a win for Eibar.
