The 25-year-old was found with stab wounds to her stomach at her home in Iten in western Kenya.

"Kenya has lost a jewel who was one of the fastest rising athletics giants on the international stage, thanks to her eye-catching performances on the track," Athletics Kenya said in a statement.

Last month in Herzogenaurach in Germany, Tirop shaved 28 seconds off the world record for a 10km road race with a time of 30 minutes and one second.

In August, she finished fourth in the 5,000m at the Tokyo Olympics.

Tirop shot to prominence as a junior and she confirmed her early promise at the 2017 world championships in London with a bronze in the 10,000 metres.

She also came third two years later in the same event at the world championships in Doha.
