Two dead after latest Russian suicide attack

Two police officers were killed on Monday when a suicide bomber targeted a police building in the Russian republic of Ingushetia. The attacker blew himself up outside the local police headquarters in the Ingush town of Karabulak at about 8.20am, according to authorities.

β€œThe suicide bomber died at the scene and six police officers with injuries from the blast were taken to hospital, where two of them died,” a statement said.

After being prevented access to the compound, the bomber detonated his explosives as a car full of officers entered.

A second, much more powerful explosion went off shortly after 9am in a car parked across the street from the police station. A police source told the AFP news agency that this blast was triggered by a police bomb squad.

The deadly attack came after a wave of suicide bombings killed more than 50 Russians last week. The Russian government blamed Islamists from the North Caucasus region and vowed to crack down on them.

Ingushetia, a predominantly Muslim province of the North Caucasus that neighbours war-torn Chechnya, has been troubled in recent years by an Islamist insurgency.
